PREPARATION AND X-RAY CRYSTAL STRUCTURE STUDY OF CRYSTALLINE COMPOUNDS IN THE COSO4-BI2O3 SYSTEM
Abstract
TWO NEW COMPOUNDS, IN THE COSO4-BI203 SYSTEM, WERE PREPARED AND STUDIED BY X-RAY METHODS. BY HEATING THE MATERIALS AT 930-980 C WITH VARIOUS INITIAL COMPOSITIONS, THEY WERE TAKEN IN SINGLE CRYSTAL FORM, ORTHORHOMBIC [BI2COO3]S04 AND MONOCLINIC [BI1- XCOXO]2 (SO4)1-X 0.14<X<0.18. THE STRUCTURES WERE DETERMINED BY MEASURING THE CRYSTALS ON A SINGLE CRYSTAL DIFFRACTOMETER. THE STRUCTURE OF [BI2COO3]SO4 CONSISTS OF [BI2COO3]N LAYERS INTERLINKED BY SO4 GROUPS. CO ATOM, IS SIX OXYGEN COORDINATED AND HAS THE RARE FOR CO TRIGONAL PRISMATIC COORDINATION. [BI1-XCOXO]2 (SO4)1-X IS CHARACTERIZED BY [BI1-XCOXO]N LAYERS WITH DISORDERED SO4 GROUPS BETWEEN THEM. BOTH COMPOUNDS FORM PLATE-LIKE CRYSTALS.
