Investigation of gas storage processes in solid materials
Abstract
The subject of this Doctoral Thesis is the storage of hydrogen and other gases in clathrate hydrates. Hydrates are solid crystalline materials that mainly consist of water and their properties are similar to those of ice. The major structural feature of hydrates is that their crystal lattice contains cavities where small gaseous molecules can be entrapped. The main target of this Thesis is to evaluate hydrates as potential materials for hydrogen storage. Apart from hydrates where hydrogen is the single guest component, hydrates that contain promoters are also of great importance. A promoter is an organic substance that significantly reduces the formation pressure of a hydrate. For a complete understanding of the general behavior of hydrates in the processes of gas storage, other gases are also investigated including methane, argon and helium.
