Biology of the species Ruditapes decussatus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Araxos lagoon and Evinos estuary
Abstract
The present doctoral thesis took place at the department of Biology in the University of Patras, with the financial support of the Institution of Government Scholarships. The subject of the thesis was to study the biology of two populations of the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus, one located in the lagoon of Araxos (northwestern Peloponnisos) and the other in the estuary of Evinos River (southern Aitoloakarnania). For that purpose specimens were collected manually from October 1999 until September 2002 and record of the environmental parameters and the phytoplanktonic concentration took place. That was followed by a laboratorial determination of the specimens’ morphometry, age, growth, mortality, ethology, and reproductive cycle. Finally, the data that came up were statistically analyzed to provide unfailing conclusions.
