Processing and interpretation of deep seismic reflection data in Ionian Sea

Abstract

Deep Seismic Profiling (DSP) being one of the most useful seismic methods, aims at obtaining information about the structure of the crust and the upper mantle. The seismic data from a DSP survey along the line ION-7 in Ionian Sea have been processed and interpreted. During the seismic reflection experiment carried out in 1992 with the support of the European Union within the frameworks of the JOULE PROJECT STREAMERS, seven seismic lines of total length 700 Km were scanned in the central Mediterranean Sea from southern Italy to western Greece. One of these lines namely ION - 7 crosses the deep Ionian basin and the Gulf of Patras. Strong sea floor and internal multiples, coherent noise and lateral reflections make almost imposed difficulties in discriminating the primary reflections especially from deeper horizons. Two methods have been proposed and applied for the suppression of multiples. One method involves demultiple techniques prior stacking. In particular, it combines deconvolution ...
