LOW-LAND SOIL CLASSIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT FOR POPLAR CULTIVATION IN NORTH GREECE

Abstract

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOIL ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR POPLAR GROWTH AND MORE SPECIFICALLY SOIL TEXTURE, SOIL STRUCTURE AND HYDROLOGICAL CONDITIONS. BEST SITES FOR POPLAR CLASSES I AND II, ARE SANDY, LOAMY AND CLAY LOAMYSOILS WITH GROUND WATER SURFACE BETWEEN 80CM AND 250CM MOST OF THE YEAR. LIGHTTEXTURED SOILS, LOAMY SAND WITH RICH IN ORGANIC MATTER HORIZONS IN DEPTH MORE THAN 80CM, OR CLAY AND SILTY CLAY SOILS WITH ADEQUATE ORGANIC MATTER WITH GOOD AERATION AND MOISTURE CLASSIFIED IN THE II CLASS WHEN THE SURFACE OF GROUND WATER OCCURS BETWEEN 80CM AND 250CM, MEADIUM QUALITY SITES, CLASS III, ARE SOILS LOAMY SAND WITH FINE TEXTURED LAYERS IN MORE THAN 80CM DEPTH, WITH PLATY STRUCTURE AND LOW ORGANIC MATTER CONTENT. SITE QUALITY CLASSES IV AND V ARE SANDY SOILS AND SOILS WITH GROUND WATER LEVEL IN DEPTH LESS THAN 80CM OR MORE THAN 250CM.SOILS HEAVY TEXTURED WITH LOW ORGANIC MATTER CONTENT AND COMPACTED AS WELL AS SALINE AND ALKALINE SOILS WAS CLASSIFIED IN THE IV AND ...
