JAPAN'S POLICY AND THE LAST PHASE OF THE EASTERN QUESTION (1919-1923)
Abstract
JAPAN SIGNED THE TREATY OF SEVRES IN 1920 IN ORDER TO PRESERVE HER STATUS AS ONE OF THE GIVE GREAT POWERS BY OBTAINING HER PLACE IN THE STRAITS COMMISSION ANDHER RIGHTS OF JUDICIAL CAPITULATIONS. HOWEVER HER CONTACT WITH THE EASTERN QUESTION WAS EITHER FRUSTRATED BY THE GRECO-TURKISH WAR IN ASIA MINOR OR SACRIFICED BY A PRIOR IMPORTANCE OF HER RELATIONS WITH GREAT BRITAIN. THE TREATY OF LAUSANNE SIGNED IN 1923, UNDER WHICH THE STRAITS COMMISSION WAS DEPRIVED OF MOST OFVITAL FUNCTIONS AND THE CAPITULATORY REGIME IN TURKEY WAS TO BE ABOLISHED, CONTRIBUTED TO A FURTHER LIMITATION OF JAPAN'S INTERESTS IN THE EASTERN QUESTION.
