THE HYDROCORTISONE INDUCED CHANGES IN THE PEROXISOMES OF NEWFORM RAT HEPATOCYTES
Abstract
THE HYDROCORTIZONE INDUCED CHANGES IN THE PEROXISOMES OF NEWBORN RAT HEPATOCYTES WERE STUDIED BY ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS. HYDROCORTIZONEADMINISTRATION RESULTED IN AN INCREASE IN THE TOTAL VOLUME OF THE PEROXISOMES ESPECIALLY THE PEROXISOMES WITHOUT CRYSTALLOID CORE (TYPE Q). THE DIAMETER OF THE PEROXISOMES Q WAS INCREASED. THE NUMBER AND TOTAL VOLUME OF THE PEROXISOMES WITH CRYSTALLOID CORE (TYPE P) WAS DECREASED. CHANGES IN THE APPEARANCE OF THE MATRIX OF THE PEROXISOMES WERE NOTED, TOO. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE CHANGES WAS DISCUSSED IN CONNECTION WITH THE ROLE OF THE ORGANELLE IN THE METABOLISM OF THE NEWBORN RAT HEPATOCYTES. THE FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT PEROXISOMES Q PARTICIPATEIN THE PROCESS OF GLYCONEOGENESIS.
