THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTH IN THE LYRICAL LIFE: A CONTRIBUTION TO THE SOURCES AND THE POETICS OF ANGELOS SIKELIANOS

Abstract

THE STUDY FOCUSES IN THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLOGICAL THEMES AND ELEMENTS OF THE LYRICAL WORK OF SIKELIANOS AND DEALS WITH THE ORIGIN OR THEIR SOURCES, DESCRIBES THE CONSTRUCTION OF THEIR POETIC FUNCTION AND COMMENTS ON THE PROCESS OF THEIR APPEARANCE, FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE WORK OF SIKELIANOS. THE USE OF THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTH IN LYRICAL LIFE REFLECTS OR IS RELATED TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TIME WHEN THE WORK WAS CONCEIVED AND MATERIALIZED: THE FICTIONAL EVENTS, THE DOMINATING IDEAS, THE TRENDS AND THE CONFLICTS OF THE SOCIAL LIFE. THE SITUATION WHICH PREVAILED IN EUROPE AT THE END OF THE 19TH AND THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY IS EXAMINED BRIEFLY WITH RELEVANCE TO THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLOGICAL THEMES. THIS CLIMATE IS ALSO LINKED TO THE SITUATION OF THE SAME PERIOD IN GREECE, WITH ITS OWN INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERISTICS.
