CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION AND THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

Abstract

TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION, THE OPEN AS OPPOSED TO TRADITIONAL AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON VARIOUS TYPES OF CHILD'S BEHAVIOUR WERE EXPLORED IN THIS STUDY. FURTHER ON, THE CONCERN OF THIS STUDY WAS TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER SUCH INFLUENCES EXIST OUTSIDE CLASSROOM SETTINGS, I.E. IN OUTDOOR FREE-PLAY SESSION. TWO GROUPS OF TWENTY CHILDREN EACH, ATTENDING THE ABOVE CLASSROOMS WERE OBSERVED FOR TEN MINUTES AT THREE POINTS OF A SCHOOL-YEAR OBSERVATION TOOK PLACE DURING THE OUTDOOR FREE-PLAY SESSIONS AND IT WAS TYPE-RECORDED. A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE SHOWED THAT ACCORDING TO OUR HYPOTHESIS, CHILDREN UNDER THE OPEN CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION EXPRESSED POSITIVE TYPE OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR MORE FREQUENTLY THAN CHILDREN IN TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM.
