PETROGENESIS OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS OF LEROS ISLAND (GREECE)
Abstract
ON THE BASIS OF STRATIGRAPHIC AND LITHOLOGICAL CRITERIA AND OF THE DIFFERENCESIN METAMORPHIC GRADE, FOUR METAMORPHIC FORMATIONS HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED. ANALYSES OF MINERALS GIVE EVIDENCE FOR PROOPRESSIVE CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONAL CHANGES WITH INCREASING METAMORPHIC GRADE. STUDY OF THE PARTITIONING OF ELEMENTS AMONGCOEXISTING PHASES SUGGESTS THAT A CLOSE APPROACH TO CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM HASBEEN ACHIEVED DURING METAMORPHISM. CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES FORMED THE BASIS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECTS OF THE ROM COMPOSITIONON THE COMPOSITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF CERTAIN MINERALS. ON THE BASIS OF SYSTEMATIC VARIATION AND THE APPEARANCE OR DISAPPEARANCE OF SOME METAMORPHIC MINERALS THE METAMORPHIC TERRAIN OF LEROS MAY BE DIVIDED INTO CHLORITE, BIOTITES, GARNET AND STAURDITE- KYANITE ZONES OF PROGRESSIVE REGIONAL METAMORPHISM.
