National Archive of Ph.D. Theses (N.A.Ph.D.) top

National Documentation Centre (EKT), is, by law, the competent authority for the development and maintenance of the National Archive of Ph.D. Theses, instituted in 1985 and operated by EKT since then. NA.Ph.D. collects, in digital form, doctoral dissertations awarded by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Greece as well as Ph.D. Theses awarded to Greek scholars by foreign HEIs and certified by the Hellenic N.A.R.I.C.

The recent Law 4765 Government Gazette A ' 6/ 15.1.2021 stipulates the following:

  • Article 12 'Increments based on formal qualifications and locality' paragraph 1, subparagraph a:

    'The score in the written competition for candidates in the categories P.E. and T.Ε. has been increased as follows: a) By five (5) points for those having a doctoral dissertation in a scientific field, that is deemed acceptable in the ASEP’s Notice of Selection, according to the classification of the National Archive of Ph.D. Theses.'

  • Article 16 'Vacancy notice' paragraph 2, subparagraph i:

    'The ASEP’s Notice, regarding doctoral dissertations, includes the acceptable scientific fields according to the classification of the National Archive of Ph.D. Theses.'

  • Article 29 'Personnel selection criteria in order of priority' paragraph 1 subparagraph aa:

    'Candidates for appointment or recruitment to positions for which a degree of Higher or Secondary Education is required (categories: P.E., T.E., D.E.) are classified in ranking tables in descending order of total score per branch / specialty, as results from the grading of the following criteria: [...] Only for the categories P.E. and T.E. doctoral dissertation in a scientific field deemed as acceptable in the ASEP’s Notice of Selection, according to the classification of the National Archive of Ph.D. Theses: four hundred (400) credits.'

National Archive of Ph.D. Theses’ Development top
1985
  • Law 1566/1985 (art. 70 par. 15) for the establishment of the National Archive of Ph.D. Theses (NA.Ph.D.) by EKT, which specifies, among others, the completion of NA.Ph.D.’s form as a necessary condition for the degree.
1986
  • Use of ABEKT 3.00 software for creation of a catalog containing various doctoral theses’ metadata.
1992-1998
  • Online availability of metadata catalogue using the 'HERMES' provider which supported search by using CCL (Common Command Language).
1999
  • 12.000 doctoral theses are digitalised.
  • Transfer of doctoral theses’ metadata to ABEKT 5.00 which implemented cataloguing standards (UNIMARC, UNIMARC Authorities and ISO 2709).
2010
  • Digital Repository infrastructure’s development using DSpace software (it is an open source software and ensures friendly metadata’s search and interoperability with other information systems, repositories, multiple search engines and internet search tools e.g. Google, Scirus).
  • Ensure long-term preservation of digital files.
2014-2018
  • Regular adjustments to Ph.D.MS. Stakeholders (HEI Secretariats, Hellenic N.A.R.I.C., doctorate holders) submit a Ph.D. thesis easily and directly. Also, EKT’s employees supervise both the whole process and the submission.
2019-2021
  • New fully digitalized process of N.A.Ph.D.’s compilation and distribution starting from Ph.D. Management System’s redesign which is developed and operated by EKT, as part of the implementation of its legal obligation [National Archive of Ph.D. Theses’ compilation (N. 1566/85)], technically based on the new era of public services’ digitalization.
  • Enhancement and empowerment of the statistics’ for each Ph.D. thesis but also, for all Ph.D. theses of the Repository.
  • New features for more efficient search and navigation and also, in order to improve user’s interactivity.
Part of N.A.Ph.D.’s technological upgrade is carried out and is based on the operation "National Information System of Research, Technology, Development, and Innovation: Infrastructure of Accumulation, Documentation and Distribution of Digital Content & Data ensuring interoperability, long-term preservation and open access" implemented by EKT under the operation program “Public Sector Reform” (NSRF 2014-2020) and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and national resources.

National Archive of Ph.D. Theses’ Ιnfrastructure top

N.A.Ph.D. consists of two individual information systems, which are developed and operated by EKT:

  • I. Ph.D. Management System: is used exclusively by the Secretariats of the Schools/ Departments of Greek academic institutions (hereinafter Secretariats) and Hellenic N.A.R.I.C. This system exclusively allows the authorized staff of both the Secretariats and the Hellenic N.A.R.I.C, as well as doctorate holders, to complete the submission process easily and directly, guiding them by successive steps.
  • II. N.A.Ph.D. Theses: is an information system which contains all doctoral dissertations that have been collected and be available since the law was enacted. This is a Digital Repository and it is developed by using EKT’s internal expertise.

National Archive of Ph.D. Theses: Repository top

EKT, in fulfilling its institutional role as a Scientific Infrastructure, promotes the collection, documentation and dissemination of reputable scientific and cultural content in Greek and international scientific community and promotes Open Science and Open Access.

The basic principles on which the content of the N.A.Ph.D. is based are:

  • protection and enhancement of open access to research knowledge,
  • promotion of new scientific knowledge,
  • support of new researchers in their effort to make their work known and accessible both to the Greek and the international scientific community, and the public.

All the Ph.D. Theses, who have been collected to date since the introduction of the law, are available in the Repository. This system have been developed using internal EKT expertise.

For all the dissertations, metadata are available, i.e. data that concern to them, accompany them and document them, including: title, abstract, Ph.D. holder’s name and surname, scientific field, year of doctoral degree’s award, educational institution, names of members of the examination board, keywords, country and language. For the vast majority of dissertations, the Ph.D. Thesis’ digital file is available for browsing and online reading.

EKT is a Νational Authority of the Hellenic Statistical System Authority, so in this context N.A.Ph.D. is used by EKT for data collection and statistical analysis related to doctoral studies in Greece.
