Saint Andreas of Crete the Melodist: life and work

Abstract

In this doctoral dissertation an attempt is made to rework the life and times of St. Andrew, Archbishop of Crete. Emphasis is given on the points of his life which have been dark: the priest's monothelitical (one/divine willing of crisis) heresy, his trip from Crete to Constantinople about an ecclesiastical matter and his random exile to Lesvos, where he finally died. All the sources related to his life (lives, encomia, synaxaria, epigrams, hymns, acolouthiae, troparia, historical testimonies) are enumerated and recorded, as well as a comparison among the most important of them is made, in order to establish their common beliefs or disagreements. Later on, the priest’s artistic, poetic and prose, production has constantly been reviewed. The author and poet’s criteria of style have been recorded, in an attempt to prove the view about Andrew as the creator of the literature kind of canon.
