Crisis management and islamic terrorism: the cases of Paris and Brussels
Abstract
The main objective of the present thesis is the development of an understanding of the nature of terrorism, as well as the function of contemporary governmental crisis management systems through the examples of the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13th 2015, and in Brussels on March 22nd 2016. Our research is split in two parts: a theoretical and an empirical part. The first part focuses on examining the terrorists’ profiles, their main strategies, as well as the French and Belgian counterterrorism measures taken before and after the attacks. The second part examines the reaction of the French and Belgian press 15 days before and after the attacks in each case. For the analysis of the sample of articles, Content Analysis was the main qualitative research tool used. In order to conduct the thesis research we used primary and secondary sources.
