Dimitris Lialios (1869-1940): biography, catalogue of works, edition and recording of six pieces for violin and piano

Abstract

This dissertation describes the work and life of the composer Dimitris Lialios (1869-1940), who is the first modern Greek composer from the greek mainland to write a symphony (Mitternachts Traum) and big symphonic compositions for choir and orchestra (Missa pro Defunctis) and to cultivate various types of chamber music (4 string quartets and piano trio). He lived and worked in Patras, Athens and Munich. This dissertation is a historical/musicological study, based mainly on primary sources. In addition, it includes a musical performance part. It focuses on the composer’s works for violin and piano, which are numerous, virtuosic and richly complex. The first part of the dissertation presents the composer’s life in five different periods. The second part includes the complete catalogue of his compositions. The next part is the critical edition of the following pieces for violin and piano: Illusion, Mein Leid, Ballade no. 1, Ballade no. 2, Tanzballade no. 1 “Smyrna”, Sonata in A minor. The ...
