History and arithmetic of representation methods: investigating the greek example
Abstract
The aim of the thesis is the classification and categorization of diverse and often changing electoral systems in Greece, in order to offer an analysis of their mathematical function in regards to the proportionality degree that they generate over the allocation of parliamentary seats and to the political direction in which each system turns the election result. The research is divided into two parts. The first involves the theoretical and methodological framework of the study of electoral systems. Mainly present the theoretical background of various forms and kinds of representation (Chapter 1), a brief but complete record of all known electoral methods (Chapter 2) and the main international approaches of political analysis on the importance of the electoral system for the formation of party system (Chapter 3).
