The Problem of Meaning: Cornelius Castoriadis and Max Weber on society as sinnwelt
Abstract
The Thesis examines the intellectual relationship between Cornelius Castoriadis and Max Weber, with emphasis on the element of meaning (Sinn). In the first two parts of the Thesis, the work of Weber and Castoriadis respectively is reconstructed, while the third part consists of an attempt to set up a debate between them. This dialogue starts by critically examining Castoriadis' remarks on Weber's writings and then opens up to the theorization of topics such as the ontology and methodology of the social field, Marx and Marxism, the (im)possibility of a rational foundation of political and moral values, politics, bureaucracy and Modernity.
