The role of information and communication technologies in the sustainability of higher education institutions: innovative tactics in education, research, development, management and public relations

Abstract

The present work analyzes the current status of the Greek Universities. It identifies strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis), and examines whether the new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are able to reverse the current difficult situation. An assessment is attempted for the impact of ICT on all academic functions (administration, education, and research) based on existing local data and international examples. The thesis priority is to develop a successful operating model that will enable the university to complete its mission. Hence the potential of ICT is examined as an educational and research tool and in reorganizing services, improving procedural tasks and making expertly decisions.The historical review of the exponential growth of the Greek universities is necessary in order to comprehend the increased operational complexity, which essentially imposes the use of ICT.
