The reading history of an ex-drug user: case study
Abstract
This thesis is a case study focusing on the reading practices of an adult ex-drug user during her entire life span. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of a review of literature that is relevant to the thematic axes of my research: reading (from the perspective of literary theory, psychoanalytic literary criticism, and sociology of reading), substance dependence and recovery in a therapeutic community. In terms of methodology, my research focuses on a single life narrative, analysed through both thematic and performative approaches. According to this thematic approach focusing primarily on the narrative content, the subject’s life story is divided into four periods: before the drug use, during drug dependence, during therapy in the community, and after the end of successful treatment.
