The gifts of reading: reading practices in a crime fiction book club in Athens
Abstract
The current PhD research is a case study of a gender mixed face-to-face crime fiction book club in Athens. By observing 22 meetings of the reading group and conducting 25 semi-structured interviews with its members, the study aims at developing an understanding of the reading practices of the group as well as its context specific modes of reading and participation, while focusing at the same time on their interrelation with the dimensions of gender and genre. Τhe research is based on a grounded theory methodology for the following reasons: 1) for avoiding the imposition of a pre-existing theoretical framework on the empirical data, 2) for developing theory through a systematic process of coding, 3) for eschewing the “textualization” of the data by applying a “suspicious” reading mode, centered upon the “revelation” or the “exposure” of participants’ unrealized meanings.
