Functional outcome of the hand after pripheral nerve injuries at the upper extremities
Abstract
Introduction: Purpose of the study was the functional outcome, after acute sharp complete laceration of median and/or ulnar nerves and primary epineural repair at various levels in the forearm.
Material and method: There were 73 patients, 66 (90.4%) males and 7 (9.6%) females, with a mean age of 31 years (range: 14 to 62 years). The patients were categorized into group of median nerve laceration (group M), group of ulnar nerve laceration (group U), and group of median and ulnar nerve laceration (group MU) according to the type of nerve’s injury. Evaluation is based on the scoring model for quantitative documentation of functional outcome after nerve injury and repair. Analysis was conducted at three levels: sensory domain (sensory innervation, tactile gnosis, and finger dexterity), motor domain (motor innervation and grip strength), and pain/discomfort domain (hyperaesthesia and cold intolerance). Total score range from 0 to 3, with each domain contributing 1 point. Furthermore, we ...
