Art was and still a universal language. Artworks can be defined by purposeful, creative interpretations of limitless concepts or ideas in order to communicate with each other. Art is something that visually stimulates an individual’s thoughts, emotions, beliefs or ideas. Art is a realized expression of an idea-it can take many different forms and serve many different purposes. Printmaking is the process of making art works by printing, normally on paper. Except in the case of Monotype, the process is capable of producing multiples of the same piece, which is called a print. Each piece is not a copy but an original since it is not a reproduction of another work of art and is technically known as an impression. Except in the case of Monotype, the process is capable of producing multiples of the same piece, which is called a print. Each piece is not a copy but an original since it is not a reproduction of another work of art and is technically known as an impression. Painting or drawing, on the other hand, creates a unique original piece of artwork. Prints are created from a single original surface, known technically as a matrix. Common types of matrices include: plates of metal, usually copper or zinc for engraving or etching; stone, used for lithography; blocks of wood for woodcuts, linoleum for linocuts and fabric plates for screen-printing. But there are many other kinds, discussed below. Works printed from a single plate create an edition; in modern times usually each signed and numbered to form a limited edition. Prints may also be published in book form, as Artists' Books. A single print could be the product of one or multiple techniques. In the beginning, before the printing press, printmaking was not considered an art form, rather a medium of communication. It was not till the 18th century that art prints began to be considered originals and not till the 19th that artists began to produce limited editions and to sign their prints along with the technical information necessary to authenticate the work. The art of wood engraving is of greet antiquity, and was practiced at an early period, although in a crud state. It is supposed to have originated with the Chinese, who made impressions on paper from wood blocks, as early as 1120 B.C. Wood stamps, with engraving hieroglyphic characters, were also used by the early Egyptian for making impressions on bricks and other articles made of clay. This fact was established by the discovery of stamps of this character in the tombs at Thebes, and other places Woodcuts were used in ancient Egypt and Babylonia for impressing intaglio designs into undressed bricks and by the Romans for stamping letters and symbols. The Chinese used wood blocks for stamping patterns on textiles and for illustrating books. Woodcuts appeared in Europe at the beginning of the 15th cent., when they were used to make religious pictures for distribution to pilgrims, on playing cards and simple prints, and for the block book which preceded printing. At that time the artist and the artisan were one, the same person designing the cut and carving the block. One of the first dated European woodcuts is a St. Christopher of 1423. I was concerned about a whole and objective study of the Print-making Art in Egypt; my study consists of six chapters which are delineated below: Chapter One: Concluded of Historical Resume about the Art of Printmaking in Egypt. This background provides how the early Egyptian used the wood engraving manner in the curtains and sheets decoration by using the hieroglyphic words as stamps. After the appearance the paper industry in Egypt in Islamic period, this paper was used instead the leather to make copies.
