EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF SHEAR BEHAVIOR OF FILLED ROCK JOINTS

Abstract

THE PRESENT STUDY IS AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM OF THE SHEAR BEHAVIOR OF FILLED ROCK JOINTS. REPLICAS OF NATURAL ROUGH ROCK JOINTS WERE USED AS SPECIMENS MADE FROM A SPECIAL CEMENT BASED MODEL MATERIAL, WITH PROPERTIES REPRESENTING A COARSE GRAINED ROCK OF MEDIUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IN PHYSICAL SCALE.THESE SPECIMENS WERE TESTED IN DIRECT SHEAR IN A PURPOSE- BUILT SHEAR BOX UNDER A NORMAL STRESS RANGE CORRESPONDING TO MOST CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKS. A REPRESENTATIVE FRICTIONAL MATERIAL WITH ANGULAR GRAINS (MARBLE DUST) AND A WEAK PLASTIC CLAYEY MATERIAL (KAOLIN) WERE USED AS INFILLS. THE EFFECT OF THE THICKNESS OF THESE FILLING MATERIALS, THE ROUGHNESS OF THE ROCK WALLS AND THE NORMAL STRESS ON THE SHEAR STRENGTH AND DEFORMABILITY OF THE ROCK JOINTS ARE SEPARATELY STUDIED. ALSO THE TYPE AND THE LOCATION OF THE FAILURE SURFACES AND THE NUMBER ANDDISTRIBUTION OF THE CONTACT AREAS BETWEEN THE ADJACENT ROCK WALLS ARE EXAMINED.
